We pulled every number directly from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission — so you can read this once and not second-guess yourself at the counter. The short answer: 2 oz public, 10 oz home, 2 oz per dispensary trip, in any combination of flower, concentrate, or edibles.

How the 2026 law changed everything
In April 2026, Governor Healey signed the Modernizing Cannabis Laws Act. Three things changed for adult-use customers.

Daily limit doubled
The per-customer daily purchase limit doubled from 1 ounce to 2 ounces of flower or its equivalent.
Equivalency standardized
The CCC formalized conversion rates so you can mix flower, concentrate, and edibles up to your 2-oz ceiling.
Home cap unchanged
The 10-ounce home possession ceiling didn’t change. Anything over 1 oz still requires locked storage.
Carry up to 2 ounces in public
That’s plenty for a long weekend or a few weeks of moderate use — about 56 grams, or roughly 120 medium joints.
If you’re carrying cannabis on you in Massachusetts — walking down the street, riding in a car, picking up at the dispensary — the legal ceiling is 2 ounces of flower or its equivalent.
Worth knowing: the 2-ounce ceiling applies to all forms combined, not 2 ounces of flower plus 10 grams of concentrate. The equivalency rule (below) does the math.
Two ounces is your daily ceiling — in any combination of flower, concentrate, or edibles. The dispensary POS does the math automatically.
Keep up to 10 ounces at home
The 10-oz limit hasn’t changed since 2016 — only the daily purchase limit changed in 2026. One rule that surprises people: anything above 1 oz at home has to be in a locked container.
That’s written into 935 CMR 500.00. A combination safe, a locking storage box, even a lockbox in a closet all count. “Locked,” not “industrial-grade.”
If you live with anyone under 21, the locked-storage rule isn’t optional.
Where the rules don't change
Inside your primary residence, the 10-ounce ceiling has stood since 2016. Locked storage, the open-container rule, and a few pieces you should know.
2 ounces per visit — all dispensaries combined
Massachusetts tracks daily purchases through Metrc, the seed-to-sale system every MA dispensary uses. You can’t buy 2 oz at one shop and another 2 at the shop down the street the same day.
Your per-day total across all dispensaries can’t exceed 2 ounces. The system flags it. The budtender’s responsibility is to check before ringing you up — if you’re close to the line, they’ll tell you.
Mix product types up to your daily limit
Administrative Order No. 6 sets the conversion rates. Each of the three columns below equals your full daily ceiling. Mix and match up to the limit:

Vape carts, dabs, tinctures, RSO — measured by active THC.
Gummies, chocolates, drinks, tinctures — measured by active THC.
What it looks like in your basket
A real-life mixed cart: 1 oz flower + a 1g vape cart at 80% THC + a 100mg edible pack. That’s about half your flower allowance, ~10% of your concentrate cap, and 10% of your edibles cap. Well within limits.
The dispensary’s POS does the math automatically. If you’re close to the line, the budtender will tell you.

Don't smoke and drive
Cannabis follows the same rule as alcohol: driving while impaired is illegal. Massachusetts doesn’t set a fixed THC blood-level limit — OUI charges are based on observed impairment.
The open-container rule applies. Cannabis being transported in a vehicle has to be in a sealed container, stored where the driver can’t reach it (trunk is ideal). Loose joints in the cup holder are a citation.
Yes, you can shop with an out-of-state ID
Holyoke Cannabis (and any MA adult-use dispensary) sells to anyone 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID. The 2-oz daily limit applies the same way it does for residents.

The thing to know: federal law prohibits transporting cannabis across state lines — true even between two legal states. Once you cross a border, you’re in federal trafficking territory. Can I share cannabis with a friend?
Yes — adults 21+ can transfer up to 1 oz to another adult 21+ as a non-commercial gift. Selling it without a license isn’t legal.
Can I bring cannabis on a plane?
Federally, no. TSA operates under federal law. Even flying within Massachusetts (like Boston to Nantucket), the airport is federal territory.
Can I use cannabis on federal property?
No. National parks, federal courthouses, military bases, and federal post offices are federal land where federal law applies.
What's the penalty if I'm carrying more than 2 oz?
Possession of 2 oz or less in public is legal. Between 2 oz and a larger threshold (“intent to distribute”), it’s a civil infraction with a fine. Larger amounts trigger criminal charges.
Can I grow my own?

Federal employees can be terminated for cannabis use, even if it’s legal in their state. The federal government still classifies cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance.
Where can I legally consume?
