What to bring

1. A valid government-issued photo ID showing you’re 21+. Driver’s license, state ID, US passport, military ID, or a foreign passport all work. Two requirements:
- The ID must be unexpired
- The photo and birthdate must be readable
Out-of-state IDs are fine — Holyoke serves anyone 21+ regardless of state of residence.
2. Payment. Cash is always accepted. Debit cards work through a cashless-ATM system (you’ll see it called “PIN debit” at checkout — it processes like an ATM withdrawal). Credit cards do not work at any Massachusetts dispensary — that’s federal banking law, not a Holyoke rule. If you forget cash and don’t have a debit card, there’s an ATM in our lobby.
3. A rough goal. Not a strain name, not a specific product — just an answer to “what are you hoping for from this?” Examples that work:

When you walk in, the first stop is a small vestibule or check-in area. A staff member will ask to see your ID. They’ll scan it (or check it visually), confirm you’re 21+, and let you through to the retail floor. The check takes about 15 seconds.
A few things to know about the check:

Cash, debit, and why no credit cards
Massachusetts dispensaries can accept cash and debit cards but not credit cards. The reason is federal: cannabis is still a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, which means Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover refuse to process cannabis transactions. Most banks also won’t touch them, which is why dispensaries operate largely in cash.
What works:
- Cash — always accepted; bring a few extra bills for state tax
- Debit card via cashless ATM / PIN debit — at checkout, the cashier will run your debit card through a system that processes like an ATM withdrawal. The transaction is rounded up to the nearest $5 or $10 (the system can’t charge exact cents), and you’ll see it on your bank statement as an ATM withdrawal, not as a retail purchase
What doesn’t work:
- Credit cards — declined by every processor
- Apple Pay / Google Pay — these route through credit card networks, so they don’t work either
- Personal checks — not accepted
If you arrive without cash and your debit card has any issue, there’s an ATM in our lobby. Standard ATM fees apply (usually $3–4).
A practical tip: cannabis prices in Massachusetts include the listed price plus a 20% state retail tax plus a 3% Holyoke local tax — so a $40 listed item rings up around $49. Budget accordingly so you’re not surprised at the register.
What you leave with
After you pay, the budtender will hand you your purchase in an opaque, sealed exit bag. Inside:
- Your products in their original child-resistant packaging — each item lab-tested, labeled with batch number, total THC%, total CBD%, harvest/manufacture date, and producer name
- A receipt showing your purchase and the Metrc tracking number that ties your transaction to the state’s seed-to-sale system
- The exit bag itself — opaque (you can’t see in), often resealable, and required by Massachusetts CCC regulations
Driving home with your purchase:
- The exit bag stays sealed until you’re home. Open-container rule applies.

Once you get home
You’re home. The package is on the counter. Now what?
Start low. Whatever product you bought, take the smallest reasonable starting dose:
- Edible: half a 5 mg gummy (2.5 mg)
- Pre-roll: 1–2 small pulls, then set it down
- Vape: one slow 2-second draw
- Tincture: 1–2 drops under the tongue
Wait. The hardest part of any first cannabis experience is patience.
- Edibles: 90 minutes before considering more. Do not redose at the 30-minute mark.
- Pre-rolls / vapes: 10–15 minutes between pulls/draws.
- Tinctures: 20–30 minutes before redosing.
Set the scene. First-time cannabis experiences are heavily affected by where you are and who you’re with. A familiar couch, a quiet apartment, a snack you like, and a movie or playlist queued up is the gold standard. Don’t try cannabis for the first time before an event, a meeting, or a long drive.
Have a backup plan if you overdo it. This is rare with the doses above, but worth knowing: too-much-cannabis discomfort feels unpleasant (racing heart, anxiety, dizziness) but isn’t dangerous. The protocol is the same regardless of format: quiet room, water, a small carb snack, time.
