With the legalization and de-stigmatization of cannabis during the 21st Century, cannabis has gone from just “weed” or “pot” to an incredibly expansive and diverse group of unique products with individual intake methods. One of the major distinctions we are seeing these days are between two main types of the cannabis plant, “Hemp” and “Psychoactive cannabis”. These two varieties are fairly popular and are generally mentioned the most within the cannabis industry.
The “Hemp” cannabis plant can be defined as containing less than 0.3% THC, the psychoactive ingredient in ingestible cannabis products that gives users the sense of being “high”. “Hemp” is generally only used for industrial purposes like paper and clothing and is also given the name “Industrial Hemp”.
The “Psychoactive Cannabis” plant is defined as containing high concentrations of THCA and Delta-9 THC, which when ingested will give you the sense of being “high”. They will also generally contain higher levels of both minor cannabinoids and terpenes which we discussed in prior articles. This is what you will receive across the counter when purchasing either recreational or medical cannabis.
Even though there are basic definitions and accepted terms in the cannabis community, one should always check their locals laws as they can change drastically from state-to-state.
