Sativa, Indica, Hybrid Strains: What Does it All Mean?

Indica, Sativa, or Hybrid: What's the Difference? – Daily High Club

When looking for cannabis products, we see many important descriptors associated with all of them. One of these main descriptors will be Sativa, Indica, or Hybrid strains. We see these labels everywhere and different strains can cause different effects depending on the user. Seriously though, what do these strain terms really mean and how do they affect us?

Sativa Strains

The word sativa was originated in 18th century in Europe and Western Eurasia as a term used to describe cannabis grown for hemp fibers and cannabis seeds. Over the years this term has changed greatly in meaning. Today, the word sativa generally refers more to the style in which the plant grows and what effects you might gain from it. Sativa plants are much taller with narrower stalks and skinnier leaves.  Sativa cannabis buds are said to give the user a more uplifting effect and will be better suited for the daytime. These buds have also been said to be slightly fluffier and less dense in consistency.

Indica Strains

The word indica originated around the same time as Sativa, around the 18th century. Though the word indica was used to describe the intoxicating varieties of cannabis that was generally found in India and other parts of Asia. These plants are generally short and stout with broad, sometimes dark colored leaves. Indica plants grow much closer to the ground and can be describe as bush-like in many cases. Indica cannabis products have said to be better suited for either the evening or nighttime and has said to be useful for sleep aid and relaxation.

Hybrid Strains

Now that cannabis cultivation has become more scientific, crossed varieties of Sativa and Indica plants have flooded the market. This cross is what many refer to as a hybrid. Much of the cannabis that we find either in the grey market or legal cannabis community will fall under this category and can lean heavier towards either side depending on the cross of strain varieties.
