Limonene is one of the most aromatic terpenes found in cannabis giving certain strains their trademark “citrusy scent”. It’s a terpene most commonly found in citrus fruits and is known for creating the more fruity aromatic scents found in cannabis. Historically it’s been used for it’s anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal effects. In cannabis however it is said to be more commonly associated with uplifting/stimulating effects as well as stress relief. Strains with high limonene include: Sour Chillz, and Black Mamba.
Pinene
Pinene is one of the most researched terpenes found in cannabis flower, in fact it has two varieties; alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. Alpha-pinene is found more commonly in cannabis while beta-pinene if more abundantly found throughout plant life. As the name suggests pinene is responsible for the more “pine” like aromas in cannabis plants. It has been historically used as an anti-septic, however in cannabis it has been associated by many with energy boosting and focusing effects.
Linalool
Hundreds of plants produce linanol, the most notorious being lavender. Many claim it is useful as a sleep aid in essential oils, lotions, and creams. This terp in conjunction with the the “entourage effect” is claimed to reduce anxiety, stress, and relax muscles. In cannabis it produces the more floral notes we associate with certain strains.

Caryophyllene
Caryophyllene is present in many herbs and spices including black pepper, basil, and oregano. Strains with high concentrations can produce spicy, warm notes reminiscent of cinnamon and cloves. What makes this terpene special is it’s relationship with our endocannabinoid system, and it’s ability to bind to CB2 receptors. This binding is said to produce the more euphoric effects we associate with cannabis, which makes caryophyllene a sought after terpenee for many consumers. Strains with high levels of this terpene include: Citral Glue, Grape Pie
Humulene
The aroma of Humulene is often described as earthy or musky. Hop plants have a high concentration of humulene that gives hops it’s distinct odor. The possible benefits of humulene are not well known. However many claim it has energy-boosting and appetite- suppressing effects.
