What is a Cannabis Plant?

Cannabis has been cultivated throughout the last 6000 years in varied capacities. From fabrics and paper, to food and herbal supplements. Containing over 400 unique chemical compounds, uses for cannabis and its many different product forms has exploded in popularity as more states move towards recreational enjoyment. Due to widespread prohibition over the last 100+ years in Western culture, cannabis research has been stunted and proper long term studies have yet to be conducted. As States start to loosen their grip on cannabis control, we as a nation are quickly moving towards properly understanding the chemical nature of cannabis and its many properties.

Are there more than one kind of Cannabis Plant?

Though there are many varieties of cannabis plant, there are two main sub-species known as Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa. Indica plants are shorter/wider, with broad leaves, and can sometimes have bush like characteristics. Land race Indica plants hail from places with significant elevation, including places like the Hindu Kush Mountains. Sativa plants are generally much taller/skinner, have sharper/thinner leaves, and are a much lighter color. Land race Sativas can generally be found closer to sea level in places like the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. Landrace cannabis plants are native to individual regions all over the world. With the recent popularization of cannabis and its cultivation, we have seen the selective crossbreeding of both these subspecies from across the globe. This has led to an ever growing list of unique strains available to us. Many containing both Sativa and Indica properties or “Hybrid” varieties.

Future Cannabis Plant safety concerns

With the implementation of cannabis prohibition within the United States, access to both education regarding cannabis and safe use practices have been extremely limited. Access to high potency cannabis products has also been limited. Recreational cannabis should never be consumed by anyone under the age of 21. Driving and the operation of heavy machinery is also prohibited. Cannabis may be transported in a vehicle if properly stored in a sealed container and there has been no consumption. State law requires all cannabis products to be consumed in private homes only and can result in monetary fine if violated. Cannabis may not be sold to any individual but can be gifted in quantities of 1 gram or less. Consuming alcohol while enjoying cannabis is not recommended. Withdrawal symptoms may also be experienced if cannabis intake is reduced or stopped completely. Holyoke Cannabis will provide a consumer tracking journal for strain names and effects. The use of cannabis while pregnant is not recommended as health risks associated with these practices are still largely unknown.
