Mandatory Enrollment in the Alaskan Patient State Registry – 6/2/99
During this day in cannabis history, all Alaskan based medical cannabis patients were required to register with the Patient State Registry. Patients were also required to posses and registered ID card. Prior to this law taking place, many citizens were claiming “affirmative defense of medical necessity” when caught with cannabis product. This defense was no longer valid once patients were required to register.
Congress May Ban Cannabis Use Say’s U.S Supreme Court – 6/6/21
On June 6th, 2005, the United States Supreme court ruled that congress has the right to prohibit the sales of cannabis, even though state law might say otherwise. After cannabis was seized during a DEA raid of a medical patient’s home, a group of medical patients sued both the DEA and the current attorney general at the time John Ashcroft in federal court. This case was originally Gonzales v. Raich. The US Supreme Court held that the Commerce Clause gave congress the power to criminalize the cultivation and consumption of cannabis.
