With cannabis consumption on the rise, stoners and animal lovers are wondering; “What exactly are the effects of cannabis on my pet?” With little peer-reviewed research on cannabis (let alone the effects on animals) many parents are left in the dark about the possible risks and benefits of the plant. So what do we know?
Edibles
According to a new study published in the journal PLOS One, cannabis edibles are the likely contributor to an increase in animals consuming THC. Since edibles are infused into normal everyday foods, animals and especially dogs that can’t tell the difference can end up eating too much and getting sick. Differentiating between sickness induced by food or by THC has proved difficult however. Many edibles are infused with chocolate making it hard for veterinarians to tell if the sickness is the result of the dog ingesting THC, chocolate, or a combination of both. It’s why vets recommend owners keep their cannabis edibles out of the reach of pets such as dogs.
That being said, many individuals have had luck with smaller doses of THC for their pets for a wide range of issues. It is always recommended to speak with a professional and do at-home research before attempting anything at home.
CBD
CBD on the other hand seems to have potential benefits with animals suffering from certain debilitating illnesses. Some users state this cannabinoid has shown to be useful in the reduction of seizures in humans. New controlled studies have shown CBD to have positive impacts treating epilepsy in dogs as well. Other studies show CBD having a positive impact on pain management, and in the treatment of conditions such as osteoarthritis in pets. However these studies are very limited, and most evidence regarding therapeutic treatment for animals has been anecdotal.
Ultimately more research needs to be done before any owner decides on medicating their loved one. The best thing you can do as a parent is be responsible with your cannabis consumption. Talk to your vet before trying any homeopathic treatments, and keep your edibles far away from where your precious pets can reach them.
