Joint rolling can be a tedious and intimidating process for those not equipped with the proper amount of dexterity and experience. Rolling papers, though cheap, are prone to breakage if not rolled properly. However with most things practice makes perfect, and like most things there isn’t only one way to do something. Joints can vary in shape and size and finding the right method might turn you and others on to rolling joints. It’s like Origami, but for cannabis. 

The “classic joint” for example might be one of  the easiest to make but the hardest to master. Before you roll you’ll need to grind your flower, and have a set of rolling papers with crutches or filters. To begin you’ll need to place the crutch at one end of the rolling paper as this provides support for the joint’s shape and gives stability. Next you should place your ground bud symmetrically along the paper before you begin to roll. If you feel comfortable at this point, have the two sides of the joint meet. Gently move the paper back and forth to shape the bud into a cylinder, and make sure to take your time. Once you’ve shaped the joint, continue to roll your fingers until the closest flap is oriented in a way that covers the flower. Next begin to tuck the closest paper tightly around the crutch to eliminate voids. Follow this process gently up the cylinder of cannabis until you reach the top. Finally lock down the crutch by pushing it towards the rolled bud, give it a quick lick and seal it. Begin packing the tip with a thin rod or pen and twist off to finish.

It’s a straightforward method but it takes time to truly perfect without creasing or crinkling the paper. Other packing methods include adding extra flower and shoving it down like a musket. This gives the joint a more “cigarette” look to it. 

A method of rolling that may make the process easier for beginners is using a dollar bill as structural support, and trust me you won’t be burning any money. 

Just place your ground cannabis perpendicular to the shortest end of the dollar bill, and add your ground bud. Shape it by rolling the dollar bill back and forth. Next place a rolling paper sticky side up between your cylinder of bud and the dollar bill. Fold the bill in half and begin rolling upwards with your thumbs. Make sure the paper is wrapping around itself properly. Next remove the joint from the dollar bill, lick to seal, and twist it how you would a classic joint. This method is simple but at a cost to the quality of the joint. The paper may be crinkly and may not burn as efficiently; but it works!

Finally we’ll learn how to roll a classic “L” joint. This joint might sound complicated but it’s easier than it seems. This method is the same as rolling a classic joint but this time it requires two rolling papers. To begin, orient one of the papers normally with the sticky side facing you. Next place the second rolling paper underneath the first and rotate it 90 degrees until the ends match together forming an ‘L’ shape. This is where the “L” gets its name. Make sure the glue from the second paper is touching the end of the first one. Lick the lower portion of the glue from the second paper to stick them together. To smoke less paper, cut the “L” shape to make it a single even joint. Now we have essentially increased the length of the normal paper. At this point you can pack and roll the flower like you would any other joint.

Joints may seem difficult and might even be annoying at first. However, learning these methods may save you time and money. Why buy Pre-Rolls when you can roll your own to your liking?
