The Difference Between Distillate and Full Spectrum Cannabis Oil: Vapes
Now that consumers over the age of 21 have legal access to cannabis products, the different types and varieties in each cannabis category continue to expand. Looking through a recreational dispensary menu concentrate and vape section, you will notice a wide variety of not only strains, but also oil type. These oil types can generally be broken down into two main groups, distillate and full-spectrum. Though what do these title’s really mean?
Distillate:
The process of distillation is certainly not a new concept and has been used in a wide range of fields from creating alcohol, to other essential oils. Distillation is the process of breaking down bio-mass into a concentrate of a single chemical. In the world of cannabis, this generally refers to 9-THC and THCA. The psychoactive ingredient in the cannabis plant. One of the main benefits of distillation is the ability to use almost any material containing THC to create concentrate. You are even able to use cannabis flower that has failed in testing in bud form as the distillation process will remove any unwanted impurities. You are also able to concentrate much higher levels of THC. There are although certain drawbacks. When distilling down to just the base D9-THC and THCA you are losing many of the other beneficial cannabinoids that could potentially impact the effect of the product.
Full-Spectrum:
Full-Spectrum cannabis oils cover a fairly large range of extractions and will contain a much fuller level of cannabinoids than a distillate product. Examples of full spectrum extraction methods are Co2, ethanol, butane, and hexane. There are many other methods as well. These methods will not only concentrate the THC in the cannabis plant, but also pull levels of other cannabinoids into the concentration. These types of extraction methods will most likely smell, and taste much stronger as finished distillate will have no smell or flavor.
