This Week in Cannabis History: President Richard Nixon Declares a National War on Drugs June 17th, 1971
On June 17th, 1971 President Richard Nixon declares a national war on drugs demanding that congress provide the legislative authority and capital resources to fuel what he called an “offensive”. Nixon is quoted in saying;
“America’s public enemy number one in the United States is drug abuse. In order to fight and defeat this enemy, it is necessary to wage a new, all-out offensive.
I have asked the Congress to provide the legislative authority and the funds to fuel this kind of an offensive. This will be a worldwide offensive dealing with the problems of sources of supply, as well as Americans who may be stationed abroad, wherever they are in the world…
I have brought Dr. [Jerome H.] Jaffe into the White House, directly reporting to me [as Special Consultant to the President for Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs], so that we have not only the responsibility but the authority to see that we wage this offensive effectively and in a coordinated way.”.
Though many years later we now see the true effects of the “War on Drugs” and what is has accomplished. We now see overcrowded prisons and an overworked judicial system. We see a clear lack of return on investment in terms of stopping addiction and the flow of drugs. We see human rights violations against anyone who is suspected of possessing or dealing in drugs. We see all these things as a direct result of using violence and fear as a deterrent to drug use, plus much more. We can only hope to see a better understanding of drugs and drug addiction in our communities and elected officials in the future.
