What is 4/20?
by Jordan Baldwin
For those who are unaware 4/20 is the day tokers around the world gather with friends to light up and experience the psychedelic effects of cannabis; but why April, and why on the 20th?
There are a few possible reasons for this date and time, but the real origins remain a mystery. Steven Hagar, a former editor for High Times Magazine claimed that the ritual started with a group of high-school students in the 1970s. At 4:20 P.M these students would ritualistically smoke cannabis everyday. The fad spread amongst young people and “420” became a catch all term for smoking weed. Eventually this ritual was converted into 4/20 for the calendar and a new holiday was born! A group of Californians released documents to support this theory but the evidence was never verified.
Another popular idea was that “420” was a penal code used by California police for cannabis but there was no evidence or government records to support this claim.
4/20 in many ways is a protest holiday, a form of civil disobedience. However with more states legalizing cannabis the holiday has begun to turn away from it’s roots in protest culture, and into a marketing platform for the cannabis and entertainment industries. 4/20 has been used in advertising for music festivals, and in other broader, more retail focused markets. In the same way bars and restaurants have used St. Patrick’s Day to increase alcohol sales, 4/20 has become increasingly co-opted by corporate entities to sell merchandise and other products. However this doesn’t mean the holiday has lost all semblance of it’s original self. In fact 4/20 and cannabis more broadly have become mainstream cultural staples of Americana. The popularity of the holiday has served only to de-stigmatize cannabis, and bring it into the cultural mainstream on a scale the originators could’ve only dreamed of.
