What’s going on Holyoke, MA tokers? Today we’re going to highlight the importance of terpenes and how to distinguish them!

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are aromatic compounds that determine the smell of many plants and herbs. However many people associate them with cannabis since the plant has a large concentration of them. Terpenes are what causes orange peels to smell the way the do, as well as pine trees, lavender, and basil. They’re used in concentrated forms in products like perfume, lotions, and cannabis vapes. However not all cannabis vapes use cannabis terpenes which is why distinguishing between terpenes is important for consumers.

Cannabis Terpenes

Cannabis terpenes work the same way they do in other plants, however cannabis terpenes can interact with cannabinoids when ingested. This chemical dance is known as the “Entourage Effect”. This effect is claimed by many tokers to change the experience they get from cannabis, and is seen by many as being more important than even the THC content of a product. In many vapes these terpenes are reintroduce after the cannabinoid extraction process. Many are strain specific, which is what most consumers expect when they’re buying their favorite strain vape. However this isn’t always the case.

Botanical Terpenes

Cannabis shares many terpenes with other plants. Limonene is a common terpene that naturally occurs in both cannabis and citrus peels. Myrcene is a terpene that occurs in mangos as well as cannabis. However many of these terpenes are lost in the extraction process and as a result manufacturers choose to get them from other plants which proves cost effective. These are known botanical terpenes. These terpenes are chemically identical to those found in cannabis however they’re more readily available. Botanical terpenes are often stigmatized for not being “natural”, however their effects are identical. Issues usually arise when consumers are expecting certain terpene content from specific strains. Botanical terpenes can change the aromas and flavors one might expect from specific strain vapes.

Hemp Terpenes

Hemp derived terpenes require more bio-mass than cannabis or botanically derived terpenes. There’s less terpene content in hemp which usually results in the entire plant being used in the extraction process. Hemp and cannabis plants are the same species, however the difference is legally defined by it’s THC content. A cannabis plant has to have less than 0.3% THC for it to be considered hemp. Hemp terpenes however are more cost effective, as hemp plants are more abundantly available. Almost all states can grow hemp, while very few have fully legalized cannabis production and consumption. As stated before terpenes between botanical, cannabis, and hemp plants are the same.
