What Really is a “Strain Name”?
Strain names are one of the most important and defining descriptors when looking to purchase cannabis. It is the first thing you see when scrolling through your many options on a dispensary menu. A strain name is the name identifier for the type of cannabis flower that you will be purchasing. Instead of just “hybrid cannabis flower #3” it will instead be something like “Saturday Morning” which will be the name used when asking for this specific strain. Even though it seems fairly straightforward, there is a lot that goes into a strain name.
How are Strain Names made?
Most commonly, whoever creates the genetically new strain by breeding two other strains together, will use the two original names and try to mash them together. A more experienced cannabis connoisseur, who knows the effects of the two mother/father strains, may be able to determine the effects and what to expect solely based on the name.
Now that cannabis branding around specific strains is becoming ever more popular, “naming rule” we mentioned isn’t always the case. Many of the new patented strain names are arbitrary and are for building brand awareness alone. These strains will be almost impossible to have any preconceptions about and will not always provide the original strains that were used during breeding.
