Whether you are a cannabis user or not, you most likely have heard of “4/20”. Whenever it is mentioned the ears of cannabis users everywhere perk up. The date of April 20th has been a major date throughout recent history as a day to celebrate cannabis and all it has to offer, but why?
Who Celebrates 4/20?
As for the what, April 20th is a date of Cannabis celebration for all. Many large outdoor gatherings are organized in support of both cannabis as a whole and the widespread legalization of the plant in general. It is also used to promote the expulsion of prior cannabis related crimes for citizens. A great deal of cannabis users who are of an older generation carry criminal records for offences that would not be looked at twice during our current day in age.
But why 4/20?
The why for surrounding April 20th and the reasons it is held in such high regard are still up for debate. There are many explanations floating around. Currently the most widely accepted story is about a group of friends from California. These friends would meet daily after school at exactly 4:20pm for a smoke session and to hangout. This in turn became a shorthand code (420) for smoking in general, which than was added as a calendar date 4/20 or April 20th. Another popular theory is that the California PD used 420 as a cannabis penal code. Though this has never been confirmed.
