Holyoke Massachusetts:  A Brief History

Home - Lyon and Fitzpatrick, LLP

We have been extremely lucky to open our doors in such a beautiful place like Holyoke, MA. Surrounded by wonderful businesses and people. It is hard to ask for much more from a retail location. Full of rich history and a variety of culture, it truly is a hidden gem among Massachusetts cities.

Holyoke Founding

Founded in 1745 as a small agricultural village, it was not always the sprawling metropolis you see today. In 1849 a group of investors from Boston decided they wanted to create Holyoke into an industrial city. This required a major overhaul on the surroundings. The Connecticut river was damned and three separate canals were created, each sitting at different elevation. These canals were all about a mile in length and span a total of around 4.5 miles today. Holyoke actually resides on one of these canals, within one of the factory buildings that was built during this period.

Originally many of these buildings were used for textile, but quickly shifted into paper production. Creating paper requires huge amounts of water energy to produce. Being seated on the canal helped with both the large amount of water and made it easier to supply energy to mill. Producing paper also produces a massive amount of pollution; bleach and other harmful chemical solvents are needed to produce paper. Unfortunately, many of these chemicals were dumped directly into the canals, damaging the water quality.

Holyoke Today

Today many of the canals are either in the process of being cleaned or have been extensively cleaned in the past. Holyoke is also home to one of the largest Puerto Rican communities in the world! Giving Holyoke diversity and culture. We cannot be more excited to see what the future of Holyoke, MA holds!
